Name: Hayley Melanie Poplawski
Age: 16
Year: 3
Parentage: Created by Libitina, goddess of funerals - real parents Agnes and Merill Poplawski (Please see History for explanation)
Allegiance: Neutral
Appearance: Hayley doesn't look all that great, which is the obvious sideffect of zombiefication. She wasn't dead enough for long enough to start rotting away that much, but it's obvious that she was starting to move along in the whole process of rotting.
Hayley is very thin with ashen skin, and you can see most of her bones. Her skeleton is very fragile, and her eyes are sunken, and are a very pale, glassy gray, with the eyebrows and eyelashes falling away. Her teeth have started to go askew, and her form is somewhat stunted, leading Hayley to walk in a slightly shambling manner. Hayley's hair, while it used to be a glossy brown in life, is now very brittle and thin, and lanced with gray. It falls to about her mid-back, and the remains of bangs frame her face. It has the alarming habit of falling out in clumps at times. (The Aphrodite cabin has repeatedly tried to give her a wig, which doesn't help because then her hair really starts falling out.) There is some evidence of decay on her legs and a gash from the accident that hasn't healed on her back, and her nails are cracked.
In an attempt to make herself look less like the zombie she is, Hayley has adopted to wearing an outfit that, while appropriate to her "job", also makes her look like someone overly-obsessed with classic funeral fashion, and therefore has the complete opposite effect. She is often clad in a long black dress made of sateen which sweeps the ground, with a slightly scooped neck and three quarter-length sleeves. She also wears black gloves, black flats, and a smallb lack hat with a black lace veil. It never fails to make people ask if she is conforming to Victorian norms of mourning, and to say "I never knew you were married. I'm sorry for your loss."
Also, she smells a little. Luckily, there's perfume for that.
Personality: Hayley, while an outgoing person while alive, has gone through a strong personality change since dying. Because dying tends to do that to you. It means that a lot of people are confused by Hayley, and she confuses herself, because she's trying to transition from the state of being alive, and then being dead, and then being not alive but not dead, which consists of more confooshun than you will ever know.
She's kind of a creep. Mostly because Hayley, accustomed to being in a place where it is very very quiet, also walks around very quietly. She's not much of a talker, and when she does talk, her voice is very quiet and whispery. Part of this is because the strength of her voicebox is faded, the other part is because Hayley hates to disturb "the silence of death" or whatever it was she'd rattled off. Much of Hayley's life consists of gliding around almost imperceptibly and then wandering up behind people and staring at them creepily. She spends a lot of time just sitting in the corner. Hayley is also sometimes struck by bouts of sadness for her former life, as she cannot contact them anymore.
When Hayley does talk, one realizes that she is actually rather perceptive. However, Hayley does have some blind spots - mainly, in that she prefers to hang back and let situations get worse before she attempts to take a leadership position. Even then, her leadership can be rather weak. She's something of an anxious person, but is god at hiding it, and is getting better at knowing what is going on. She just needs to recover the ability after adjusting to her new undeadness.
Hayley likes to work behind the scenes. She's something of a spy, playing on both sides. However, Hayley can be swayed easily in weaker moments by emotions, and so she generally keeps herself strongly neutral in any case until she can decide for herself. However, when Hayley does pick a side, if she isn't weakened, she will strongly hold to her beliefs. Hayley has very strong morals, and hates to act wrongly. She is cautious and carefully considers every step.
Fairly analytical and logical, than, Hayley is often confused in this new world of hers. Essentially divided in between two worlds, it is not uncommon for her to drift off into something of a trance state, which she is difficult to be awoken from. Slowly Hayley is beginning to adjust, losing some of her disbelief. Actually, she winds up using it as an excuse to stand around and look cryptic a lot, which also weirds people out.
History: Hayley Poplawski led a fairly normal life until, at age 16, she was killed in a car wreck after a drunk driver slammed into her car. She would have been judged to the Fields of Asphodel, but Libitina, the Roman goddess of funerals, had some other plans.
She started to work to bring Hayley back to life, supposedly to be her demigod "daughter" and an assistant, as the rate of dead trying to get into Hades increased. Libitina said that she couldn't "process funerals" fast enough or something similar. Finding out about this project, Hades had suspicions, and said he would only allow it as long as Libitina swore to stop rebelling against him.
Libitina's true plan had been to raise Hayley as a connection to the world of the living in order to help her overthrow Hades. However, she was able to convince the god that she agreed, and Hayley was raised and sent to Camp Half-blood.
Hayley was Libitina's assistant until she discovered Libitina's plans from someone in the Underworld. Aghast at this, Hayley nonetheless continues to act as Libitina's accomplice until she can muster the force to bring the goddess down.
Good Habits: Hayley is very logical and careful, and perceptive. She is able to summon a lantern and lead the souls of the dead to Hades. She can also tell exactly how and when someone died if she finds a body.
Bad Habits: She's somewhat undecisive and has a hard time making choices. Hayley is also fairly useless in fights, because she is so frail, and has few fighting-related powers.
Interests: Hayley is interested in the funerary rites of other nations, sewing, lamps, lace-making, astronomy, and the life cycle of the salmon. (No joke.)
